The Alesis Nitro is a 5 piece electronic drum set mimicking the configuration of a standard acoustic drum kit. You find snare, kick, 3 toms, hi-hat, crash and ride cymbal. The set is compact, but not too tiny and requires a small to medium size setup space. The whole drum set is kept in black and dark grey colour.

Drum Pads

pads

All 4 pads (suprisingly) have arecently upgraded mesh playing surface of 8”. The snare has 2 zones so that the head and rim can be played. The toms are mono zone triggers. The rebound and trigger sensitivity of these rubber pads is quite good, although they do produce a certain amount of room noise.

The kick pad is also made out of rubber and has a steady stand, perfect to resist the force of the beater impacts.

This pad is certainly not the quietest kick drum on the market, but it can be played with a regular kick drum pedal (included), what can be seen as an advantage to other electronic drum sets in this price range, who usually only have a kick trigger pedal.

Cymbals

cymbals

All three 10” cymbals are partially covered with rubber and come with a choke function, meaning the “ring sound” can be stopped by pressing the edge.

The hi-hat opening and closing are controlled by a foot controller, matching the style of the kick pedal.

Pedals

Hi-hat and kick drum pedals are nearly noiseless. The hi-hat controller enables a smooth transition between open and closed hi-hat. The beaterless kick pedal is amazingly sensitive but also very quiet. It is one of the quietest electronic drum kick drum solutions available.

Both pedals are detached from the rest of the setup and allow you flexibility in terms of positioning. The kick drum pedal can be upgraded to a Roland KT-10 or a Roland KD-9 kick tower that can be played with a real single or double bass drum pedal.

Module

The Alesis Nitro Module features 385 instrument sounds, 25 preset drum kits and 15 editable user drum kits, that can be customised according to your liking. A Metronome and 60 background songs help you to improve your timing while practising.

2 Additional pad inputs for a 4th tom pad and a 2nd crash make it possible to expand your Alesis Nitro. MIDI In- and Out or the USB connector can be used to connect the drum module with a PC via direct USB or audio midi interface to trigger drum software such as EZdrummer 2 or Superior Drummer 3.

Connect your music player via AUX input to play along to your favourite songs.

You find the usual headphone output plus additional stereo out for monitors and mixing desks.

Hardware

The drum rack has 4 vertical legs that are connected by 3 horizontal bars. Extra large cymbal arms allow you to adjust the cymbal pads to your preferred height.

The pad mounts enable a flexible tom- and snare pad adjustment.

Conclusion

The Alesis Nitro is a low budget entry level drum set with only the basic necessities. It is not the most advanced electronic drum set in terms of triggering and sound, but it does what it is supposed to do.

If you want to start out with drumming and are not really sure if it is for you, or if you are concerned about your kids really sticking with that instrument, this drum set is ideal, as it is not too expensive but works good enough. And this is totally legit. Who wants to waste money on something that might be a phase? Play it smart and start low.
